This is a nice tutorial on using the Windows Media Encoder to create WMV videos.  Use this encoder to record from a live source or from a pre-recorded source.  You can also use WM Encoder to record your desktop to create nice tutorial and howto videos with minimal effort.  The Windows Media Encoder is a free tool from Microsoft.
